Introducing…

Eastern Illinois University Samothrace

This is a dynamic group of Eastern Illinois University students interested in continuing the BPW tradition by forming a student organization on campus. EIU Samothrace will be the only college organization in the State of Illinois and only one of a very few in the nation. Kudos to them!

According to Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, these students are a part of the “Millennium Generation”. In Dr. Diane Hoadley’s message for the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, they are described;

“these students consider responsibility, creativity, independence and flexible working hours to be highly significant characteristics of desirable work. Moreover, a majority of those surveyed indicated that they wanted to work for themselves or start their own business some day. Additional characteristics …include a high level of enthusiasm for friends and family and a desire for careers that provide an opportunity to help.”

Northwestern Mutual seems to have pinpointed his generation well by the preliminary meetings that have taken place to organize a local organization on the campus of EIU.

On December 1st, 2005, Mary-Nance Miller, Patty Shupe and nine EIU students met in the University Union to discuss the interest and formation of a student BPW group on campus. Brianne Adrias organized the first formal meeting. Mary-Nance gave a short history lesson about BPW and how the Samothrace name was selected. Interest surveys were passed among the group while discussing officer duties, committees and questions. The young ladies were very enthusiastic and eager to learn more. The next formal meeting is to be after Christmas break. In the meantime, Brianne (voted in as President) has been very busy securing a faculty advisor, Katie Shaw, of EIU School of Family Consumer Science. She has adapted the by-laws with the approval of Mary-Nance and prepared them and a new organization application to the EIU Student Life office. Mary-Nance will forward the by-laws to the state by-laws chair for approval. The EIU application needed ten signatures of interested students to start a campus organization, which was accomplished.

We are looking forward to the next campus meeting in January 2006 and wishing Eastern Illinois University Samothrace much success in 2006!

Living with balance

It's nice to relax on a regular basis. Yet a life of nothing but relaxation would be unbearably miserable.

It is extremely fulfilling and energizing to put forth great effort and to make things happen. Yet if that's all you ever do, your spirit will surely become worn away.

Life is best when it is balanced. Night and day, warm and cool, wet and dry, effort and rest all benefit from each other and from the natural balance that permeates all of life.

Are you plagued by frustrations, or weariness, anxiety, doubt, confusion or lack of motivation? Then the chances are very good that something in your life is out of balance.

Often, the best way to get something done is to stop working on it for a while. And the best way to fully enjoy the time when you're not working is to practice discipline, diligence and commitment during the times when you are working.

Your life is blessed with many different aspects. Keep them all in balance, and they will all be of much greater value to you.

The Inevitable…

The Coles County Health Department is sponsoring a workshop on menopause. We have been assured that even though the sessions are targeting the 40-60 age group, there will be plenty for women who are post-menopausal as well. Those who are younger might be interested in learning what is in store and how to prepare for the inevitable. There are two sessions to choose from on February 2nd. One is from 10 am-12:30 at the Charleston Country Club and the second is 6:00 pm -8:30 pm at the Mattoon Country Club. Registration fee is $15 and includes a buffet meal. You must register by January 20th. Let Mary Nance Miller know if you need a registration form.
